The Pittsburgh Pirates have designated right handed pitcher Zach Stewart for assignment, MLB.com reported earlier today. The move was made to make room for pitcher Jeff Karstens on the 40 man roster. They signed him as a free agent earlier on in the week.

Stewart started last season with the Chicago White Sox before being sent to the Boston Red Sox in June as a part of the Kevin Youkilis trade. Earlier in the off season Boston traded Stewart to Pittsburgh as a player to be named later in an older deal.

He has pitched 103 career big league innings between Chicago and Boston. His career earned run average is 6.82 and he struggled at the end of the Boston bullpen in September and actually made a few starts as well.

Stewart was drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2008 and had been with the Toronto Blue Jays as well. He has been traded four times since he was drafted back in 2008, mostly in the American league.
