Twins, Drew Butera avoid arbitration

The Minnesota Twins and catcher Drew Butera agreed to a one-year, $700K deal, reports Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. This was Buetra's first time through the arbitration process.

Butera, 28, hit .198/.270/.279 with one home run in 122 plate appearances in 2012. He is part of the Twins three-headed monster at catcher. Joe Mauer still gets the majority of the work behind the plate, but he ended up playing first base and designated hitter 72 times last year, the same number of games he was the starting catcher. Ryan Doumit also started 56 games at catcher when he wasn't DH'ing or in the outfield, which left Butera with 32 starts behind the plate. He also hit .279 in 15 games at Triple-A Rochester.

For his career, Butera is hitting .183/.232/.265 with five home runs in 531 plate appearances. Butera has thrown out 33 percent of would-be base stealers in his career.

The Twins lone remaining arbitration eligible player is pitcher Brian Duensing.
