Padres avoid arbitration with Joe Thatcher, Everth Cabrera

The San Diego Padres have agreed to terms on one-year deals with left-hander Joe Thatcher and shortstop Everth Cabrera worth $1.35 million and $1.275 million, respectively, reports Corey Brock of MLB.com:

Thatcher, 31, almost doubles his $700,000 contract from the previous year, a nice reward for a solid bounce-back season following an injury-plagued 2011.

The southpaw appeared in 55 games for the Friars in 2012 -- primarily as a LOOGY -- posting a 3.41 ERA and 11.1 K/9 rate in 31⅔ innings. Now in his second year of arbitration eligibility, Thatcher will become a free agent after the 2014 season.

Cabrera, 26, jumped back in to the starting shortstop role for San Diego last season for the first time since his 2009 rookie campaign. The switch-hitter put up solid numbers in his return to Petco, hitting .246/.324/.324 with two home runs and a league-leading 44 stolen bases.

A Super Two player, Cabrera has three years of arbitration eligibility remaining.
