Cardinals rumors: St. Louis interested in Ronny Cedeno

The St. Louis Cardinals are among the teams interested in free agent shortstop Ronny Cedeno.

The St. Louis Cardinals are among the teams interested in free agent shortstop Ronny Cedeno, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.

St. Louis currently has veteran Rafael Furcal penciled in as their regular at shortstop. He's still recovering from an elbow injury that ended his 2012 campaign, but the Cardinals are confident he'll be ready to start the season.

Still, it remains to be determined how many games the 35-year-old will be able to play in coming off of his injury. He opted against surgery last season, and the team should get an idea of how the elbow will hold up during spring training.

They have Pete Kozma as a replacement option, as he stood in for Furcal last season. However, St. Louis appears to be interested in potentially bringing on additional insurance in the form of Cedeno.

Over 166 at-bats last season for the New York Mets, Cedeno hit .259/.332/.410 with 11 doubles and four home runs. The 29-year-old owns a career line of .247/.290/.357 over parts of eight seasons at the major league level.
