Yankees rumors: New York considering Travis Hafner, others

It was reported yesterday that the New York Yankees were possibly nearing an agreement with free agent designated hitter Travis Hafner. This proved premature, but the Yankees are considering the veteran as a possible left-handed DH along with other candidates, according to David Waldstein of The New York Times.

No deal is imminent, as Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told reporters that the team is currently "looking at all possibilities." At this point, the Yankees are in need of a regular DH after losing veteran slugger Raul Ibanez to free agency, and Hafner would be an option to fill that void.

The 35-year-old hit .228/.346/.438 with six doubles and 12 home runs over 219 at-bats last season for the Cleveland Indians. Hafner carries with him an impressive track record, as he's hit .278/.381/.507 during his time at the major league level, but he's battled injuries over recent years. Hafner hasn't registered more than 396 at-bats in a single season since 2007.

Beyond Hafner, other potential DH options for the Yankees include Jim Thome, Bobby Abreu, Aubrey Huff and Carlos Lee.
