Brewers waive Gamel, Green

The Milwaukee Brewers have placed injured first basemen Mat Gamel and Taylor Green on revocable waivers, writes MLB.com's Adam McCalvy.

When Corey Hart underwent knee surgery this spring, it was assumed that Gamel and Green would be the frontrunners to be the Brewers' starting first baseman this season. Unfortunately, injuries struck as Gamel went down with a torn ACL and Green suffered a hip injury before the season started. Both Green and Gamel ended up missing all of the 2013 season, causing the Brewers to play a dismal combination of Juan Francisco and Yuniesky Betancourt at first base this season.

Gamel, who was drafted by Milwaukee out of a Florida high school in the 4th round of the 2005 amateur draft, has spent parts of five seasons in the big leagues, all with the Brewers. He has twice been named a top 100 prospect by Baseball America, clocking in at 38th overall before the 2009 season. He owns an impressive .304/.376/.498 line in the minors, but has hit just .229/.305/.348 in 269 plate appearances with Milwaukee.

When Gamel went down, it was expected that Green would receive the lion's share of the playing time at first base, but his injury put a huge damper on the Brewers' outlook, forcing them to use sub-par hitters at a premium offensive position. Never a big time prospect, Green was a 25th round pick in the same 2005 draft class as Gamel. He has spent chunks of the 2011 and 2012 season in the majors, combining to post a .207/.266/.343 batting line.

Both Gamel and Green are currently on the 60 day DL, and would require a 40 man roster spot when reinstated. By waiving the duo, the Brewers free up roster space for the impending offseason.
