— Jesse Sanchez (@JesseSanchezMLB) October 21, 2013Performance bonuses of $1 million per year increase the potential value of the contract to $32 million. The 26-year-old Guerrero will be eligible for free agency after his age-30 season upon the completion of the deal.
Guerrero is a veteran of the Cuban League and was an All-Star in 2010 and '11 with Las Tunas in Serie Nacional. The middle infielder defected from Cuba last year and established residency with Haiti. While he was granted free agency in July, Guerrero was not allowed to sign with a team until Sept. 6, when he received an unblocking license from the U.S. Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC).
The Cuban participated in showcases in July at the Dodgers complex in the Dominican Republic and emerged as the favorites to sign him. The Dodgers neared an agreement with him last month for five-years, $32M, but Guerrero left MVP Sports Management and Consulting Agency for agent Scott Boras.
The deal will include a $10M signing bonus and will make Guerrero a free agent at the end of the contract, something his initial contract reportedly failed to do.
