Reds to hire Bryan Price as manager

The 51-year old pitching coach has been considered the frontrunner to replace Dusty Baker in Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Reds will announce on Tuesday that they have hired Bryan Price as their next manager, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. Price, 51, has been the team's pitching coach for the last four seasons and has been viewed as the favorite to land the managerial job since Dusty Baker was fired on October 4.

Price, who only made it as far as Triple-A as a player in the Mariners organization, joined Seattle's staff as pitching coach in 2001, and spent six seasons leading the team's pitching staff. He joined the Diamondbacks in the same position before the 2007 season, and was named Major League Coach of the Year by Baseball America for his efforts that season. After spending 2008 with Arizona, Price resigned from his position in May 2009 when manager Bob Melvin was fired. He joined the Phillies as a minor league consultant for the remainder of the season before becoming Cincinnati's pitching coach in October 2009.

Price is highly regarded throughout the game for his ability to speak both English and Spanish, a factor that is becoming more common in teams' managerial decisions. He was also a candidate for the Mariners' position this offseason, and interviewed to become the Marlins' manager before the team hired Todd Redmond last fall.

Although Price has long been considered the favorite to land the Reds' managerial job, they also considered Jim Riggleman, who is currently the manager of the team's Triple-A affiliate in Louisville. The 60-year old former manager of the Padres, Cubs, Mariners and Nationals will likely join the major league staff in some capacity in 2014.

As Michael Kay of YES Network reported earlier in the month, former player Paul O'Neill also expressed interest in the team's managerial opening. That interest never seemed to be reciprocated, as the team remained focused on Price and Riggleman.
