The San Diego Padres have signed right-handed pitcher Anthony Carter to a minor league contract that includes an invite to spring training, a source has confirmed to MLB Daily Dish. Corey Brock of MLB.com reported last weekend that the sides were close to agreeing to a deal.
Carter, 27, pitched to a 2-0 record and 3.47 ERA in 52 relief appearances with the Red Sox' Triple-A affiliate in 2013, registering a 11.4 K/9 ratio and 24 daves along the way. Before signing with Boston as a minor league free agent last winter, the former 26th round pick spent seven seasons in the White Sox' system. For his eight-year minor league career, Carter has a 37-37 record with a 4.58 ERA, 7.7 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 677.1 innings of work.
According to the source, Carter had interest from over half the teams in the majors after a successful season with Pawtucket. He will head to spring training with the Padres in hopes of landing a spot in the team's major league bullpen, but could provide valuable depth for Triple-A El Paso if he is unable to crack the majors for the first time in his career.
