The San Francisco Giants have agreed to sign starting pitcher Ryan Vogelsong to a one-year contract, according to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com. While the value is currently unknown, Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chroniclenoted on Thursday that the Giants were offering an incentive-laden deal that was worth more than $3 million in guaranteed money and could reach $7-8 million. The deal is pending a physical, which will come next week.
The move, paired with San Francisco's addition of Tim Hudson, signals the end of the Giants' search for starting pitching this offseason. According to a source, the team has been interested in Bronson Arroyo, but are all but out of the running following the addition of Vogelsong.
According to Chris Haft of MLB.com, the Phillies, Braves and Rangers all expressed interest in signing Vogelsong, who has stated that he would like to return to the Giants since the team declined his $6.5 million option at the beginning of the month. He will likely get a deal that could be equal to or greater than the option with incentives.
In an injury-plagued season with the Giants in 2013, Vogelsong posted a 4-6 record and 5.73 ERA in just 19 starts. His lackluster performance followed two spectacular seasons in San Francisco in which he went a combined 27-16 with a 3.05 ERA in 61 starts. He was also excellent in the 2012 postseason, surrendering only three earned runs over four starts and notching three wins en route to a World Series championship.
