Rockies, Matt Belisle exercise mutual option for 2014

The Colorado Rockies and right-handed pitcher Matt Belisle have each exercised their sides of a $4.5 mutual option for 2014, according to Thomas Harding of MLB.com. Belisle, 33, will return for his sixth season with the Rockies.

In 72 games with the Rockies on the season, Belisle posted a 5-7 record with a 4.32 ERA, 7.6 K/9 and 1.8 BB/9 in 73 innings of work. Although his ERA was higher than in seasons past, his low walk rate and high strikeout rate make him attractive to return to the Rockies at a reasonable price. In ten major league seasons with the Reds (2003, 2005-2008) and Rockies (2009-2013), Belisle has posted a 4.37 ERA with a 6.9 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9.

The Rockies have publicly said that adding an impact reliever to the bullpen this offseason will be a priority, so adding Belisle back into the mix provides security for a team looking to make changes over the winter. In another other bullpen move earlier this fall, the team declined their club option on injured righty Rafael Betancourt.
