Angels sign Chris Volstad to minor league deal

The 27-year old spent 2013 with the Rockies.

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have signed right-hander Chris Volstad to a minor league contract, according to MLB.com's Alden Gonzalez. Volstad recently elected free agency after spending the majority of the 2013 season with the Rockies Triple-A affiliate in Colorado Springs.

Volstad, 27, allowed ten runs on 19 hits in just 8.1 innings of work with the Rockies this season before being outrighted to Triple-A in late June. He spent the rest of the season with Colorado Springs, tallying a 7-6 record with a 4.58 ERA, 4.0 K/9 and 3.1 BB/9 in 127.2 innings over 22 starts and one relief appearance. For his career, the former 16th overall pick is 35-51 with a 4.94 ERA in parts of six major league seasons with the Marlins (2008-2011), Cubs (2012) and Rockies (2013).

Volstad will head to the Angels camp in the spring with a chance to earn a major league spot, but will likely serve as minor league depth for Triple-A Salt Lake.
