The Arizona Diamondbacks have acquired closer Addison Reed from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for third baseman Matt Davidson, according to a team announcement. Steve Gilbert of MLB.com first reported that the deal was close.
Reed, who turns 25 at the end of the month, will likely ssume the closer's role while Brad Ziegler and J.J Putz take over setup roles. He has been one of the better closers in baseball over the last three seasons, posting an 8-6 record and 3.79 ERA while saving 69 games in 136 apearances. Reed is under team control for the next four seasons, and will be a very affordable late-innings option for the Diamondbacks.
Reed is the second major addition for Arizona in the last week, joining slugger Mark Trumbo, who was acquired from the Angels. The White Sox were also involved in that deal, shipping Hector Santiago to the Angels and minor leaguer Brandon Jacobs to the D-Backs while receiving outfielder Adam Eaton.
Davidson, who turns 23 in March, was ranked by Baseball America as the D-Backs fourth best prospect before the deal after making his major league debut in August. In 31 major league games games at third base, he hit .237 with 3 HR and 12 RBI, but his numbers at Triple-A Reno were much better: .280 average with 17 HR and 74 RBI in 115 games.
Davidson joins a young core of recent White Sox additions that includes Eaton, outfielder Avisail Garcia and first baseman Jose Dariel Abreu. He is likely to take over third base for Chicago next season.
