As he does every week, Baseball America's Matt Eddy spent Monday morning rounding up the last week's minor free agent signings. Here's the last week of minor league signings:
Arizona Diamondbacks
The D-Backs signed three to minor league deals: C Bobby Wilson, RHP Jess Todd and RHP Adam Russell. Wilson, who spent 2008 through 2012 in the majors with the Angels, hit .208 in 66 games for the Yankees' AAA affiliate in 2013. Todd hasn't appeared in the majors since 2010, and posted a 2.15 ERA in 39 relief appearances for the Tigers' AAA affiliate last season. Russell, who announced the deal on Twitter last week, last appeared in the majors in 2011 with the Rays and had a 2.37 ERA in 42 relief appearance for AAA Norfolk in the Orioles' organization.
Atlanta Braves
The Braves signed RHP Ryan Kelly, C Matt Kennelly and OF Derrick Mitchell to minor league contracts. Kelly, 26, has never appeared in the majors and spent the 2013 season splitting time between the Padres' AA and AAA affiliates. Kennelly returns to the Braves organization after a short stint in the Reds' system last year, and Mitchell, who turns 27 in January, has spent his entire career in the minors for the Phillies.
Chicago Cubs
The Cubs re-signed OF Darnell McDonald, and a source confirms that he will receive a spring training invite and a contractual clause that allows him to leave if opportunities in Asia present themselves during the season. McDonald appeared in 25 major league games with Chicago in 2013, and hit .302 with 1 HR and 5 RBI.
Chicago White Sox
The White Sox added RHP Jairo Asencio and OF Denis Phipps on minor league contracts. Asencio spent last season with the Orioles organization, struggling in four major league appearances but posting a 2.66 ERA in 47 relief appearances with AAA Norfolk. Phipps made his major league debut with the Reds in 2012, but spent the entire 2013 season with AAA Louisville, hitting .248 with 9 HR and 49 RBI in 130 games.
Colorado Rockies
The Rockies have brought in LHP Carlos Hernandez on a minor league deal. Hernandez has spent his entire career in the Athletics' minor league system, and made 29 appearances between AA Midland and AAA Sacramento in 2013.
Detroit Tigers
The Tigers inked a trio of minor leaguers: RHP Eduardo Sanchez, LHP Patrick McCoy and 1B Mike Hessman. Sanchez is the most notable of the trio after appearing in four major league games for the Cubs in 2013, and pitching to a 3.38 ERA in 33 appearances split between the Cardinals and Cubs' AAA affiliates. McCoy has spent his entire career in the Nationals' minor league system, earning a 5.06 ERA with AA Harrisburg and AAA Syracuse last year. Hessman, who won the 2007 International League MVP with AAA Toledo, hit .240 with 25 HR and 56 RBI.
New York Yankees
The Yankees signed 1B/OF Russ Canzler to a minor league deal. Canzler has bounced around between many organizations in the last couple of years, but hit .252 with 12 HR and 62 RBI in in 125 games split between the Pirates and Orioles AAA affiliates last year.
