The Detroit Tigers announced on Wednesday that they have reached a two-year contract with closer Joe Nathan, and reports indicated that the deal was for $20 million with a $10 million team option for 2016. According to a source, the contract also includes a limited no-trade clause that will allow Nathan to block trades to five teams of his choosing over the next two years.
The teams that Nathan can block a trade to are currently unknown, and probably will not be revealed unless the 39-year old blocks a trade in the next two seasons. He is not likely to be put on the trading block, but was shopped a bit by the Rangers as they searched for offense last summer.
Nathan has only been traded once in his career, from the Giants to the Twins in November 2003. That deal sent Nathan, Boof Bonser and Francisco Liriano to Minnesota in exchange for A.J. Pierzynski and cash considerations.
