Troubled by an achy knee for most of the 2012 season -- diagnosed as chronic patellar tendinitis -- Tigers catcher Alex Avila is back at full strength and, according to GM Dave Dombrowski, "hasn't felt this good in years," reports Lynn Henning of the Detroit News. Avila received platelet-rich plasma injections in his knee shortly after the season concluded and is already doing things this winter he was unable do last offseason.
Recovery from Tommy John surgery is going well for Atlanta Braves right-hander Brandon Beachy, reports Mark Bowman of MLB.com. The young starter told Bowman that he has yet to "come across any serious hurdles" and is just "easing along" in the rehab process, which tentatively has him set for a late-June return. Beachy is currently throwing on flat ground at about 120 feet, and is expected to make the move to the mound sometime next month.
Baltimore Orioles fans are going to have to wait just a bit longer to see Japanese southpaw Tsuyoshi Wada throw his first pitch at Camden Yards. The 31-year-old left-hander, who signed a two-year, $8.5 million deal with the O's last winter, has yet to throw a big-league pitch because of serious elbow problems. Wada underwent Tommy John surgery last May, and Orioles' pitching coach told WBAL radio yesterday that the left-hander is unlikely to return until May or June.
