Rockies acquire Reid Brignac from Rays

The Colorado Rockies have acquired infielder Reid Brignac from the Tampa Bay Rays in exchange for cash considerations and a player to be named later, the team has announced.

Marc Topkin of The Tampa Bay Times was the first to report the news, as Brignac let him know of his trade to the Rockies. The Rays designated Brignac for assignment last week as a corresponding roster move to create spacefor Kyle Farnsworth and Kelly Johnson.

Brignac was selected by Tampa Bay in the second round of the 2004 MLB Draft. He developed into a top prospect, rating as high as No. 17 overall on Baseball America's top 100 list after hitting .321/.376/.539 with 32 doubles, five triples and 24 home runs as a 20-year-old between high- and Double-A in 2006.

Unfortunately for the Rays and Brignac, he was unable to put it all together in the majors. He made his debut in 2008 but didn't receive more than 100 plate appearances until 2010. That season he hit .256/.307/.385. Since then, he's hit only .185/.220/.211 over 286 plate appearances.

Over parts of five seasons in the majors, Brignac owns a career batting line of .227/.268/.317. He's manned shortstop, second and third base and both corner outfield positions.
