Miguel Cairo joins Reds' front office

Former infielder Miguel Cairo has joined the Cincinnati Reds' front office as a special assistant to general manager Walt Jocketty, the team has announced.

Specifically, Cairo will be joining the ranks of the Reds' baseball operations staff. The move ends his 17-year playing career.

Cairo spent the 2012 season with the Reds, hitting .187/.212/.280 with seven doubles, two triples, one home run and four stolen bases in four attempts. He manned first, second and third base in addition to batting designated hitter for one game. Cairo has been with the Reds since 2010, hitting .254/.309/.378 with 27 doubles and 13 home runs over the past three seasons.

Cairo has been a reserve player for the last several years, as he hasn't registered more than 400 plate appearances in single season since 2004 when he was with the New York Yankees. He's only topped 500 plate appearances in a season twice, in 1998-99 with the then Tampa Bay Devil Rays.

Cairo spent his 17 years in the majors with nine different teams, the Reds, Yankees, Rays, Chicago Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals, Toronto Blue Jays, New York Mets, Seattle Mariners and Philadelphia Phillies. The 38-year-old owns a career batting line of .264/.314/.361.
