Red Sox rumors: Boston considering parting with Alfredo Aceves?

The Boston Red Sox are hoping to continue working with right-hander Alfredo Aceves in hopes that he can "move in the same direction as his teammates," following his run-in with manager John Farrell, according to Alex Speier of WEEI.com. However, Speier notes that if this doesn't happen, the club could consider trading, demoting or even cutting Aceves.

Aceves had to be talked to by Farrell and pitching coach Juan Nieves after he lobbed pitches gently toward home plate during what was supposed to be a live batting practice session. Aceves has had issues with past managers, specifically Bobby Valentine, and there is thought that he was testing Farrell.

Whatever the case, Aceves is becoming known for suspect behavior. He's also shown an ability to be a successful pitcher in the majors, though he struggled last season.

Speier notes that if the Red Sox attempt to trade Aceves they are likely to get little in return given the questions now surrounding his makeup. If they'd rather part ways with him they could put him on waivers or simply elect to cut him. The 30-year-old has options remaining, so Boston could also demote him to start the season in Triple-A, though Speier doesn't know how this would improve his outlook.

Entering last season, Aceves had posted an ERA of 3.00 with a 2.44 strikeout-to-walk ratio from 2009-11. He finished the 2012 campaign with a 5.36 ERA.
