There's not so much going on roster-wise at the moment, but New York Mets have tacked on a bit more organizational depth, signing outfielder James Roche and right-hander Andy Wells to minor-league contracts, the team has announced.
Both hail from independent ball and are getting their first shot with an MLB organization. Neither will get a chance to make the 40-man roster right off the bat -- meaning no big-league camp -- but Roche will get a look at extended Spring Training.
Roche, 23, spent the 2012 season playing ball in the Canadian-American Association, where he batted .261/.314/.372 with four home runs in 50 games. Not much is known about Roche beyond that, as last year is the only season on his B-R page. Listed at 6' 3", 205 lbs, it seems that Roche could grow into some power yet and find himself in Flushing, but more likely he'll serve as outfield depth somewhere in the Mets' minor-league system.

Wells, 24, has bounced around between several independent leagues and clubs the last three seasons, tossing 68⅓ innings and posting a pretty miserable 8.17 ERA in that span. The right-hander out of Wagner College does boast some pretty good strikeout numbers -- a 9.6 K/9 rate -- but with a walk rate nearly as high, it becomes clear why his earned-run average is as inflated as it is. Wells will report to minor-league Spring Training.
