Mets Notes: Francisco Rodriguez, Johan Santana, Chris Young

The New York Metropolitans will always place second-fiddle to the Yankees, but they have a rich history nonetheless. Unlike some late-60's additions to the league, the Mets have carved out a little piece of historic success and can hold tightly to that.

However, the clubs wants to build on it and create more history. It may take some time, but the Mets are on their way. Here are your New York Mets news and notes:

• If there is one thing the New York Mets don't need, it's more help at the closer position. They've got three suitable closers on the 25-man roster - Frank Francisco, Bobby Parnell, and Brandon Lyon. Yet, the team has been linked to a possible reunion with former closer Francisco Rodriguez. Adam Rubin of ESPN New York does not think such a reunion will happen, though. The club has already shown little interest in Jose Valverde, who presumably would be a better option, so there is little chance they go after K-Rod.
• Johan Santana, who is looking to bounce back after an injury-plagued 2012 season, is already giving Mets' fans reason to worry. His first spring start was scheduled to be Saturday, but it has been pushed back. Marc Craig of Newsday says the reasoning is simple; Santana isn't ready. When manager Terry Collins watched Santana pitch from a mound on Wednesday, he said it was clear that Santana's arm speed was not there. Santana is still trying to get back into the swing of things and has only thrown off a mound twice since last August.
• Chris Young (the pitcher) signed with the Washington Nationals on Thursday. He had been a solid pitcher for the Mets when healthy, but he is not the type of player the team could count on long-term. However, the Mets' loss is the Nationals' gain. The Nats are expecting injuries during the season and the need for another starting pitcher. Young can and will likely fill that role says Adam Kilgore of the Washington Post.
