Orioles claim Russ Canzler, designate Luis Martinez

Canzler has been claimed for the fourth(!!) time this winter.

Rob Grabowski-US PRESSWIRE

With less a week to go until spring camp begins, Russ Canzler is on the move once again.

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed the well-traveled corner infielder/outfielder off of waivers from the New York Yankees, designating catcher Luis Martinez for assignment to make room on the roster, the team has announced.

Canzler, 26, has now swapped uniforms five times this offseason, putting him one short of right-hander Sandy Rosario for the most team changes this winter. Starting the offseason with the Cleveland Indians, over the past three months Canzler has been claimed by the Blue Jays, then back to the Indians, then the Yankees, and now the O's. One wonders if he even bothers to unpack his suitcase at this point.

More Orioles: Baltimore Better With Age?

Canzler has had just a pair of major-league stints over the last two years, hitting .271/.304/.396 with three big flies in the small sample of 26 games. He has put up much more impressive numbers in his extended time at Triple-A over that same two-year span, batting .289/.365/.508 with 40 home runs in 261 games.

The Orioles do not have much in the way of depth in the outfield of at designated hitter, so Canzler could very well find himself on the Opening Day roster so long as Baltimore doesn't decide to DFA him like everyone else has this winter.
