The San Diego Padres and Tampa Bay Rays made two minor roster moves yesterday to make room for the newest members of their organization.
Here's the dirt on those moves:
The Padres designated infielder Jeudy Valdez for assignment to make room for right-hander Fautino De Los Santos, whom the Friars claimed off of waivers from the Brewers earlier in the day. Valdez, 23, has yet to make it past Double-A and was likely on the 40-man roster as protection from the Rule 5 Draft. The middle infielder showed some serious pop in 2011 in High-A ball, but batted just .225/.273/.364 with 12 home runs last year in his first season at Double-A.
The Rays designated right-hander Dane De La Rosa for assignment to make room for designated hitter Luke Scott, whom the club officially re-signed on a one-year, $2.75 million deal yesterday. De La Rosa, 30, has had to very brief stints with the Rays over the last two seasons, amounting to 12⅓ innings of not-so-great pitching overall. The right-hander has put up solid numbers at Triple-A for the Rays -- a 3.00 ERA in 138 innings -- so if he isn't nabbed on waivers by another club he could find his way back to Tropicana at some point this season. De La Rosa is the third player Tampa Bay has DFA-ed this week, joining infielders Reid Brignac and Elliot Johnson.
