Rangers rumors: interest in Craig Gentry?

Teams are calling the Rangers about outfielder Craig Gentry.

Teams are calling the Rangers about potentially trading for outfield Craig Gentry, according to Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports.

The Rangers are not jumping at the idea of trading the centerfielder, as he is the team's only right-handed hitting outfielder other than Nelson Cruz.

Rosenthal also says the the Yankees are not one of the teams calling, despite their potential need in the outfield.

Gentry is currently competing for playing time with outfield prospect Leonys Martin, with a platoon being the likely outcome for that battle. The team of course lost centerfielder Josh Hamilton to free agency, so Gentry is expected to play a role in replacing the slugging outfielder.

Rosenthal also mentions that the Rangers have to deal with impending free agency for David Murphy and Nelson Cruz, which makes the young Gentry that much more appealing. The team has a good farm system and should be able to replenish, but Gentry will also play an important role.

Gentry is considered to be one of the better centerfield defenders in baseball as well, which is a scarce defensive position that he can provide a lot of value at.

Gentry, 29, is hitting .333 this Spring over his 12 Spring Training games.
