With third baseman David Freese set to start the regular season on the disabled list, the St. Louis Cardinals are expected to enter the year with Matt Carpenter manning the hot corner and Daniel Descalso at second base, according to Rick Hummel of The St. Louis Post-Dispatch.

Prior to Freese's injury, Carpenter was set to start the season as the team's regular at second base. He spent the majority of the exhibition season picking up the new position, and he believes this will help him as he moves back to third.

Are the Cardinals eyeing right-hander Rick Porcello.
"Playing second base for the first time, I could really get in the center of the field and see the whole game and watch how Yadi (catcher Yadier Molina) calls pitches," Carpenter said.
While Carpenter doesn't like situation that's prompted his move back to third, he does say that he feels "good" manning the hot corner. It's his natural position, and he started 22 games at third for St. Louis last season.
Carpenter appeared in 114 games for the Cardinals last season, suiting up at first, second and third base as well as both corner outfield positions. The 27-year-old hit .294/.365/.463 with 22 doubles, five triples and six home runs over 340 plate appearances.
