Opening Day is approaching, and the Los Angeles Dodgers still have eight starting pitchers for five rotation spots. Even if left-hander Ted Lilly starts the season on the disabled list, the Dodgers will still have to decide what to do with right-handers Chris Capuano and Aaron Harang, according to Steve Dilbeck of The Los Angeles Times.
Rumors have been surrounding the Dodgers rotation and extra arms throughout the offseason. Beyond Lilly, Capuano and Harang, Los Angeles' roster also includes starting pitchers Clayton Kershaw, Zack Greinke, Josh Beckett, Chad Billingsley and Hyun-Jin Ryu.
The Dodgers could enter the season using Harang and Capuano out of the bullpen, though manager Don Mattingly has previously said he doesn't view Harang as a reliever. Neither pitcher has impressed this spring, as Harang has posted an ERA of 8.20 in 18 2/3 innings, while Capuano's currently sporting a mark of 7.20 over 15 frames.
Still, Dilbeck expects there to be interest in both veterans, considering they pitched well last season. Harang maintained an ERA of 3.61 over 31 starts, while Capuano started 33 games with a mark of 3.72.
