MLBDD Week in review: Mark Prior, Mike Trout, Robinson Cano

I took in my first two ball games of the year this weekend, and I have my first sunburn to prove it. What does this mean to you? Nothing at all except that baseball is in full swing. With a little more than a week in the books, we can finally start to settle in and get a glimpse at what the season might hold. But teams aren't done making moves, and roster spots are still up for grabs.

Here's a look at the week that was:

• Curtis Granderson will miss the first part of the season, so naturally the Yankees are looking to fill his spot externally. The truth is New York will look at both internal and external candidates, but Johnny Damon won't be on their radar. won't be on their radar. Damon wouldn't mind coming back to the Bronx, but his desire doesn't factor into this decision. New York will have to be smart with how they handle the Granderson injury.
• In more New York news, because we know you can't get enough of that city, the Mets are getting excited about pitching prospect Zack Wheeler. Unfortunately, Wheeler had to scratched from his second spring appearance (it would have been his first start). The young pitcher hurt his oblique.
• The Cardinals could use a proven shortstop right about now. Rafael Furcal's elbow is not getting better. Knowing they were going to have to likely deal with Furcal's injuries, St. Louis checked in on Troy Tulowitzki. That deal ain't happening, though.
• Stephen Drew was once thought to be the future of the Arizona Diamondbacks franchise. It's amazing how quickly things can change when a fractured ankle and poor production get in the way. The Diamondbacks traded Drew to the Oakland A's, then the A's let him walk via free agency. Now, the new member of the Boston Red Sox could be trade bait. Depending on how Boston's season goes, the club could look to move him. the club could look to move him.
• Speaking of the Red Sox, Will Middlebrooks just about gave the entire organization a heart attack. He had to leave a game in the first inning last week after checking his swing and hurting his wrist. Yes, that wrist. There was an immediate fear that Middlebrooks had re-fractured his wrist, but the injury turned out to be nothing.

• Robinson Cano is going to get paid. That's just a fact. New York is hoping to negotiate an extension during the season, but Cano has said he doesn't want to talk about the contract during the season. Despite this, the Yankees made their All-Star second baseman a significant offer.
• You thought Mark Prior had retired, didn't you? Don't lie. Well, you weren't alone, but he's still pitching and still looking for another shot in the bigs. The Concinnati Reds may be the ones to give Prior that Major League shot, but for now the club has signed him to a minor league deal.
• Mike Trout is real good. Yet he will be paid like a decently-skilled player, or like a second-year player. The Los Angeles Angels have every right to save as much money as possible before Trout blows them up financially. Trout is trying to put on a brave face, but his agent is far from happy about Trout's $510k contract.
