The Arizona Diamondbacks have named left-hander Patrick Corbin as their fifth starter, according to Steve Gilbert of MLB.com.
Corbin was competing with right-hander Randall Delgado for the final spot in Arizona's starting rotation. Both pitchers started four games this spring, with Corbin posted an ERA of 3.66 in 19 2/3 innings while Delgado maintained a mark of 6.88 over 17 frames.
The D'backs decided to go with Corbin in their Opening Day rotation, while Delgado will be sent to Triple-A. He's likely to be the first starter recalled in case of injury or ineffectiveness.
Corbin made his major league debut last season, posting a 4.54 ERA over 22 appearances -- including 17 starts -- with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.44. Over parts of four seasons in the minors 23-year-old maintained an ERA of 3.78.
Beyond Corbin, Arizona's Opening Day starting rotation also includes Ian Kennedy, Trevor Cahill, Wade Miley and Brandon McCarthy.
Glad to be a part of the #Dbacks and this rotation. Couldn't be happier to be with such a great group of guys. Excited for this season!!!
