Yankees rumors: New York will target corner infielders

Considering first baseman Mark Teixeira will miss eight to 10 weeks due to a strained right wrist, the New York Yankees will survey the market for corner infielders, according to Mark Feinsand of The New York Daily News.

The Yankees recently announced that Teixeira will miss roughly two months of action as a result of his wrist injury. New York will now look to available first and third baseman, as Feinsand notes the thought will be to play offseason acquisition Kevin Youkilis at whatever position isn't filled.

While Travis Hafner has manned first base in the past, general manager Brian Cashman and skipper Joe Girardi both told reporters that he is not an option in the field. Hafner will strictly be used as a designated hitter this season.

The pickings on the free agent market are slim at this point of the spring. However, there are still a few veteran options available at first base, including Carlos Lee and Aubrey Huff. Orlando Hudson and Adam Kennedy are free agent options at the hot corner, while Scott Rolen hasn't indicated whether or not he'll return for another season.

New York could also eventually look to add an out-of-options player or one that's otherwise at risk of not making a major league roster. However, the market for these types of players isn't likely to pick up until later in the spring.
