David Ortiz injury: Red Sox DH unsure when he'll play

Earlier this week Boston Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz told reporters that he was optimistic of his chances of being available for Opening Day. However, after experiencing general soreness in both of his legs, Ortiz told reporters, including Michael Silverman of The Boston Herald, that he isn't sure when he'll be able to start playing games.

Ortiz began a "more aggressive running" routine earlier this week, according to Silverman. He appeared to be taking to the increased regimen well initially, but he continued to deal with a general soreness later into the week. Manager John Farrell told reporters the discomfort is not something that is related to the veteran's Achilles' heel, but instead it's involving "the tendons in the back of the ankles and that area."

Ortiz told reporters that they have spring training for a reason, adding that he can't be expected to not play in exhibition games and be ready for Opening Day. The slugger has said he'd like to get 50 to 60 spring training at-bats in before heading north.

The Red Sox signed Ortiz to a two-year, $26 million contract following the 2012 campaign. While his injury limited him to 90 games last season, he produced when he was healthy enough to suit up. The 37-year-old hit .318/.415/.611 with 26 doubles and 23 home runs over 383 plate appearances.
