Barney Could Return Next Week

Chicago Cubs second baseman Darwin Barney is scheduled to start his minor-league rehab assignment this weekend, reports Toni Ginnetti of the Chicago Sun-Times.

Barney has been on the sideline since suffering a deep gash on his knee on the last day of Spring Training, but could be back in the lineup as soon as next week. It has yet to be determined where the second baseman will play his rehab games, but he is supposed to get into game action Saturday, Sunday, and Monday, then return to the Cubs on Tuesday in time for their series opener against the Rangers.

Garza Still a Month Away

Right-hander Matt Garza threw another side session on Tuesday and scheduled for several more over the next couple weeks before the Cubs will start him on a rehab assignment, per Ginnetti.

Garza, who was sidelined in early spring with a left lat strain, resumed a throwing program in mid-March and has been making slow progress since then. The right-hander has been targeting an early May return to the Cubs, and it appears that he's right on track to do so.

In the final year of his contract with the Cubs, Garza is still likely to be a strong trade candidate at the July deadline if he can get back on the mound and prove that he can stay healthy.
