Baltimore Orioles claim Alex Burnett

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed right-hander Alex Burnett off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays.

The Baltimore Orioles have claimed right-hander Alex Burnett off waivers from the Toronto Blue Jays, the team has announced.

Baltimore made room for Burnett on the 40-man roster by transferring utility player Wilson Betemit to the 60-day disabled list. He will join the Orioles' Triple-A affiliate.

The Blue Jays designated Burnett for assignment to make room for outfielder Casper Wells -- who was claimed off waivers from the Seattle Mariners. The 25-year-old appeared in 67 games for the Minnesota Twins last season, posting an ERA of 3.52 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio (SO/BB) of 1.38. It was by far his best season in the majors, as he combined to maintain an ERA of 5.40 over 98 1/3 innings from 2010-11.

The Blue Jays selected Burnett off waivers from the Twins at the end of March. Over three seasons in the majors, he owns a career ERA of 4.61 with 1.51 SO/BB.

Betemit was slated to begin rehabbing his knee injury this week. The veteran expects to be reevaluated in about a month to get a better idea of when he'll be able to return.
