The NL Central was active on Friday, as one team recalled a pitcher from the minors in an attempt to improve their bullpen while another team reached out to a former player hoping to improve their pen.
Brewers interested in K-Rod
The Milwaukee Brewers are one of three teams interested in the services of reliever pitcher Francisco Rodriguez, according to Jon Heyman. The Brewers have bullpen has struggled so far to start the season, as the eight-man crew had a 6.11 ERA going into Friday.
Rodriguez pitched for Milwaukee last season, posting a 4.38 ERA in 72 innings for the Brewers. His strikeout rate has declined from his heyday, but K-Rod still strikes out an above-average number of hitters. The Anaheim Angels and the Miami Marlins are also rumored to be interested in his services.
Pirates promote Bryan Morris
The Pittsburgh Pirates recalled Bryan Morris from Triple-A, and designated Chris Leroux for assignment. Morris has pitched well in two minor-league appearances, and posted a 2.67 ERA last year in Triple-A. Leroux has been ineffected for Pittsburgh this season, and owns a career 5.56 ERA.
Kyle Lohse faces Cardinals
Brewers starting pitcher Kyle Lohse faced his old NL Central team for the first time since leaving the St. Louis Cardinals. Both Lohse and Cardinals starter Shelby Miller had strong pitching performances, but the Cardinals ended up winning 2-0.
Dan Moore has an interesting take on Lohse and the perception surrouding the starting pitcher. Moore does a good job reminding everyone that the Cardinals dearth of pitching prospects made Lohse expendable, but some of them will likely produce at Lohse-like levels.
