Blue Jays rumors: Deal for shortstop not on the horizon

GM Alex Anthopolous is on the lookout for help up the middle, but asking prices are high.

Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopolous is still on the prowl for shortstop help in the wake of Jose Reyes’ ankle injury, but doesn’t expect a deal to transpire in the near future due to high asking prices, reports Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.

Teams are often reluctant to deal everyday players this early on in the season as they haven’t had adequate time to survey how the roster they’ve constructed will pan out. It makes sense then that right now the price would be high for any sort of shortstop addition, even if it is someone like Braves infielder Tyler Pastornicky, who is not on the club’s active roster.

The Jays called up Munenori Kawasaki from Triple-A to play up the middle for the time being, but he’s barely passable as even a temporary solution to their infield problem.

Third baseman Brett Lawrie is expected to be activated from the DL on Tuesday so that should help the situation some. In fact, Lawrie played a few innings at second base during his rehab stint, meaning that the club could move Jose Bautista to the hot corner from time to time, but that would still leave Maicer Izturis as their only reasonable option at shortstop. Given Izturis' injury history, the Blue Jays better hope that asking prices go down soon.
