Cubs claim Cody Ransom

The Cubs have claimed Cody Ransom.

Jeff Hanisch-US PRESSWIRE

The Cubs have claimed infielder Cody Ransom off waivers, reports Carrie Muskat of MLB.com.

As part of the array of moves, the Cubs now have Kevin Gregg and Kameron Loe in the bullpen, and have designated Hisanori Takahashi and Brent Lillibridge for assignment.

These moves likely come as a reaction to the team's early bullpen woes, with the Cubs struggling to hold leads late in games. Loe and Gregg have late-inning experience and should bolster the team's ability to get high-leverage outs.

Ransom is a utility player with some pop, so he should add some value in places that Brent Lillibridge failed to. While these moves are not going to make headlines, they are part of just about every team's season.

Takahashi is a solid reliever and spot-starter, so he will likely catch on somewhere. One possible reunion could be a return to his former team, the Angels, because they currently lack in the pitching-depth department.
