The Oakland Athletics currently lead American League West, while the Los Angeles Angels on Anaheim have gotten off to a surprising cold start. Let's take a look at some of the news around the division.
Rangers place Julio Borbon on waivers
The Texas Rangers have placed outfielder Julio Borbon on waivers, as they were unable to work out a trade after designating Borbon for assignment. Texas attempted to work out a deal with the Baltimore Orioles and hoped to receive starting pitching in return for Borbon, but could not come to an agreement.
The speedy outfielder is unlikely to clear waiver outright, as the Houston Astros, Minnesota Twins, Chicago Cubs and Orioles were all rumored to be interested in Borbon. The Astros will receive the first shot at claiming his services.
Ryan Madson aiming for May 1 return
Angels relief pitcher Ryan Madson completed a 40-pitch bullpen session, which is a significant step in his return from Tommy John surgery. Madson was able to throw all three of his pitches in the session, and did not experience any pain while pitching.
Madson is hoping to begin a minor-league assignment next week, and is targeting May 1 for a return date. Manager Mike Scioscia does not currently know what Madson's role will be when he returns.
Derek Norris' X-rays come back negative
Oakland Athletics starting catcher took a foul tip off the jaw on Wednesday against the Houston Astros, and was forced to leave the game. The x-rays came back negative, and Norris plans to play on Friday against the Tampa Bay Rays.
Norris and John Jaso have been splitting time at catcher for the Athletics, and both have helped contribute to Oakland's hot start.
