The Miami Marlins have placed shortstop Adeiny Hechavarria on the 15-day disabled list with a right elbow contusion, according to Clark Spencer of The Miami Herald.
More Marlins: Miami should sign Jose Fernandez now
To replace Hechavarria on the roster, the Marlins recalled utility player Nick Green. They also transferred right-hander Nathan Eovaldi to the 60-day disabled list. Hechavarria's placement on the DL is retroactive to April 17.
Hechavarria suffered his right elbow contusion during warm-ups last night. Prior to his injury, he was off to a cold start to the new season. Over 52 plate appearances, he only mustered a batting line of .184/.231/.286 with a triple and home run.
Miami acquired Hechavarria from the Blue Jays over the winter during the fire sale that sent Jose Reyes, Emilio Bonifacio, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle and John Buck to Toronto. With the 24-year-old hitting the DL, the Marlins are expected to use some combination of Chris Valaika, Donovan Soto and Green to man shortstop.
Green appeared in seven games for the Marlins last season, collecting four hits over 24 plate appearances. The veteran owns a career line of .236/.303/.347 over parts of seven seasons in the majors.
