Taylor Green injury: Brewers INF requires hip surgery

Brewers INF Taylor Green will undergo hip surgery Tuesday.

Benny Sieu-US PRESSWIRE

Milwaukee Brewers infielder Taylor Green has been sidelined with a hip injury since March, and general manager Gord Ash told reporters -- including Tom Haudricourt of The Journal Sentinel -- that it will require surgery.

Ash provided no estimate as far as a potential return goes, as Haudricourt stated the procedure is simply expected to sideline Green for an extended period of time. The surgery will take place next Tuesday in Milwaukee.

Green had been rehabbing the injury in extended spring training, but he recently suffered a setback. That resulted in a visit to the Brewers' physician -- William Raasch -- who determined the surgery is necessary.

If he would have been healthy at the end of spring training, Green was basically guaranteed to break camp with the Brewers. He can cover both first and third base, and considering the injuries to first basemen Corey Hart and Mat Gamel, he could have received significant playing time early. He would have also been valuable considering third baseman Aramis Ramirez has been dealing with a knee injury that's sidelined him.

Green appeared in 58 games for the Brewers last season, hitting .184/.265/.340 with seven doubles and three home runs over 117 plate appearances. The 26-year-old owns a career batting line of .207/.266/.343 over parts of two seasons in the majors.
