Washington Nationals re-sign Chris Young

The Washington Nationals have re-signed right-handed starting pitcher Chris Young to a minor league contract.

The Washington Nationals have re-signed right-handed starting pitcher Chris Young to a minor league contract, the team has announced.

More Nationals: Gio does it all

Young signed a minor league contract with the Nationals over the winter and posted an ERA of 2.25 with nine strikeouts over four spring training appearances. He ultimately opted out of his contract when he didn't win a spot in the team's Opening Day starting rotation.

Young hoped to find an opportunity to join a team's starting rotation as at least a No. 5 starter, but instead he'll provide minor league depth for the Nationals.

After only starting eight games over the 2010-11 seasons, Young started 20 games for the New York Mets last year. Over 115 innings, the 33-year-old maintained an ERA of 4.15 with a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 2.22. He owns a career ERA of 3.79 over parts of nine seasons in the majors.
