Athletics recall Jesse Chavez, option Evan Scribner

The Oakland Athletics recalled pitcher Jesse Chavez from Triple-A Sacramento, optioning Evan Scribner to the minors to clear room for Chavez, the team announced on Friday.

Chavez is a journeyman pitcher who has bounced around the league since 2006. The right-handed made four appearances in relief for Oakland earlier this season, posting a 5.06 ERA over 5.1 innings pitched. Chavez has pitched well as a starter for Triple-A Sacramento this season, throwing 30 innings over five starts with a 2.70 ERA.

The veteran has always been able to strike hitters out, but struggles with his command and surrenders too many home runs. The Athletics hope that Chavez has been able to work through some of those issues, as Chavez has only walked five hitters and allowed one home run in the minors this season.

Scribner last pitched for Oakland on Thursday night, when he threw three scoreless innings of relief against the Cleveland Indians. Athletics manager Bob Melvin told the media that Scribner would be unavailable to pitch for the next three days after his appearances, and the team needed an arm before then. The reliever pitcher has a 5.30 ERA over 18. 2 innings this season.

The two players will likely switch roles again this season, as the team called up Chavez for Scribner on April 20. Oakland sent Chavez back to Triple-A on April 29.
