Pirates trade Brian Jeroloman to Nationals

The Pittsburgh Pirates and Washington Nationals completed a trade on Friday with catcher Brian Jeroloman being sent to Washington in return for cash considerations, reports Rob Biertempfel of the Pittsburgh Tribune.

Jeroloman, 28, will be used as minor league depth for the Nationals, who currently have just Kris Watts at catcher on their Triple-A Syracuse squad with Jhonatan Solano being called up to the majors.

The Nationals recently called up Solano from Triple-A after placing Wilson Ramos on the disabled list following a re-aggravation of his hamstring injury. Ramos had been on the disabled list earlier this season and was activated just over two weeks ago.

Jeroloman was in his first year with the Pirates' organization after the team acquired him in a trade with the Cleveland Indians during spring training. He had spent most of his career with the Toronto Blue Jays, the team who drafted him in the sixth round of the 2006 draft. In 11 games this season for Triple-A Indianapolis, the backstop has hit .222/.481/.278. Over his career Jeroloman has a shown a good eye at the plate with a .372 OBP, though he has always hit for minimal power.

Watts, 28, has played in six games for Triple-A Syracuse but has hit well in that limited time. Neither Watts nor Jeroloman is a prospect at this point in their respective careers.

There has been no word on how much money was sent to the Pirates to complete the deal.
