Rangers to activate A.J. Pierzynski from disabled list, send two to minors

Pierzynski has been out since May 9. Robinson Chirinos and Josh Lindblom have both been demoted to the minors.

Jesse Johnson-US PRESSWIRE

The Texas Rangers will activate A.J. Pierzynski from the disabled list in time for Tuesday night's game against the Oakland Athletics. Robinson Chirinos and Josh Lindblom have both been sent to Triple-A Round Rock.

There has been no corresponding move to fill the extra spot on the roster, reports the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Lindblom struggled in a spot start against the Athletics on Monday, giving up four earned runs on seven hits and two walks in 4.2 innings.

The Rangers have a double-header coming up on May 27 and could bring Lindblom back to start one of those games. MLB rules mandate that a player sent to the minor leagues must remain there for a minimum of ten days, but the league suspends that rule for a double header.

Geovany Soto has been starting for the Rangers while Pierzynski has been out. Chirinos, a catcher, was called up to back up Soto. Pierzynski was placed on the DL May 9 with a strained right oblique. Over the last two weeks, Soto and Chirinos have combined for a .756 OPS at the catcher position.

Pierzynski, 36, has hit .263/.297/.411 in his first season with the Rangers.
