Orioles activate Miguel Gonzalez from disabled list

Gonzalez will start for the Orioles tonight while Jair Jurrjens was optioned to create roster room.

The Baltimore Orioles activated Miguel Gonzalez from the disabled list on Tuesday. To make room for him on the roster, Jair Jurrjens was optioned back to Triple-A, according to Dan Connolly of the Baltimore Sun.

Gonzalez, 28, has been on the disabled list since May 9 due to a blister on his right thumb. With such a minor injury, it's no surprise that the pitcher has been reactivated so soon. The team called up Alex Burnett to take his roster spot at the time, though he was later optioned back to Triple-A in favor of Steve Johnson.

Jurrjens was called up to start on Saturday in place of the injured Wei-Yin Chen. The former Atlanta Braves pitcher pitched five innings against the Tampa Bay Rays, allowing four earned runs on six hits, though he did have a nice 5:1 K:BB ratio.

Gonzalez had gotten off to a fairly mediocre start to the season after posting a 3.25 ERA during his rookie year in 2012. This season, he had a 4.58 ERA with no truly great or awful starts. He has allowed between 2-5 earned runs in each of his six starts in 2013.

Gonzalez will start for the Orioles tonight against the Yankees.
