Cubs outright Michael Bowden to AAA Iowa

The Chicago Cubs announced that reliever Michael Bowden cleared waivers and accepted an outright assignment to AAA Iowa, more than a week after the team designated him for assignment. A former top prospect in the Red Sox system, Bowden was acquired during the 2012 season in exchange for Marlon Byrd, and has posted a 3.78 ERA in fourteen appearances out of the Cubs bullpen so far this year.

Red Sox sign Mario Martinez

The Boston Red Sox signed infielder Mario Martinez to a minor league deal and assigned him to Single-A Greenville, according to the official MLB.com transactions page. Martinez, a former Mariners prospect, was released by Seattle during spring training and signed immediately with the Detroit Tigers. After hitting .234 with 4 HR and 32 RBI for Single-A West Michigan this season, he was released by the Tigers on Tuesday and will try to continue his career in the Red Sox organization. In seven minor league seasons, the 23-year old has hit .272 with 59 HR and 339 RBI while never advancing past High-A.

Royals sign Chase Lambin

The Kansas City Royals signed infielder Chase Lambin to a minor league deal and assigned him to Triple-A Omaha, according to a press release from the Sugar Land Skeeters of the Atlantic League. Lambin, 33, hit .305 with 5 HR and 13 RBI in 24 games for Sugar Land so far this season, and is the third Skeeter to sign with a major league organization this season. In twelve minor league seasons in the Mets, Marlins, Nationals, and Twins organizations, Lambin has a career .270 average, and reached Triple-A in six different seasons.

Braves release Corey Wimberly

The Atlanta Braves released infielder Corey Wimberly, who was at AAA Gwinnett. A sixth round pick of the Rockies in 2005, Wimberly has bounced around four different organizations since 2009 and has reached Triple-A with the Athletics, Pirates, Mets, and Braves. So far this season, the 29-year old has hit .234 with 6 RBI in 25 games for Gwinnett.
