Royals trade rumors: Could Chase Utley be a fit?

The Kansas City Royals have discussed the idea of pursuing a trade for Philadelphia Phillies' second baseman Chase Utley, according to a report from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe. The 34-year old, who is a free agent after the season, may become available if the Phillies decide to become sellers as the trade deadline approaches.

With almost the entire team for sale, the White Sox may decide to move the 32-year old outfielder.

The Royals, who recently promoted Johnny Giavotella to replace the struggling Chris Getz at second base, have endured a lack of production at the position all season.

Between Getz (.214/.276/.286 in 47 games) and Elliot Johnson(.219/.248/.297 in 54 games), second base has been a consistent weak spot in the Royals' lineup, meaning that a trade deadline upgrade would make sense.

While the Royals would love to have Utley, the Phillies may not be inclined to trade him unless they are completely out of contention at the end of July. General Manager Ruben Amaro even went as far as to tell Danny Knobler of CBSSports.comthat his "intention would be to keep him in [a Phillies] uniform for the rest of his career, if possible". Because they are only 9.5 games out of contention in the NL East, the team's play in early July will determine their status at the deadline and the futures of assets like Jonathan Papelbon, Michael Young, Cliff Lee, and Utley.

The New York Yankees and San Francisco Giants are among the other teams that have scouted Utley, according to reports.
