The Cincinnati Reds have signed infielder Corey Wimberly to a minor league deal, according to a source. The 29-year old speedster will report to Double-A Pensacola.
Wimberly, a sixth round pick of the Rockies in the 2006 draft, was released by the Atlanta Braves in May after hitting .234 with 6 RBI in 25 games with Triple-A Gwinnett. The Braves were his fourth organization in as many years after spending time at Triple-A with the Athletics, Pirates, and Mets organizations from 2010 to 2012.
In 684 minor league games with five different organizations, Wimberly is a career .295 hitter with 11 HR, 222 RBI, and 284 stolen bases. He will provide organizational depth for the Reds at Double-A for the near future.
