Red Sox call up Drake Britton, demote Jackie Bradley Jr.

Steve Mitchell-USA TODAY Sports

The Red Sox called up pitching prospect Drake Britton from the Pawtucket Red Sox, the team announced today. In order to make room for Britton on the 25-man roster, the team demoted outfielder Jackie Bradley Jr.

Britton was called up to Triple-A Pawtucket less than a week ago, giving up five runs in 5.1 innings pitched with five strikeouts.

Britton was called up to help out in the bullpen, which has recently been taxed and undermanned due to injuries to lefty Andrew Miller. The team traded for lefty-specialist Matt Thornton two days ago.

Britton has had a solid season so far after being arrested for driving under the influence during Spring Training. At Double-A Portland, Britton went 7-6 with a 3.51 ERA, 80 strikeouts, 36 walks and a .254 BAA in 97.1 innings pitched. He possesses a repertoire that includes 92-94 MPH, a mid-70's 12-6 curveball, a 82-85 MPH change up. Scouts view his ceiling as a late-inning reliever
