Cubs trade rumors: Rangers closing in on acquiring Garza

The best pitcher on the trade market will be on the move soon.

USA TODAY Sports

The Chicago Cubs and Texas Rangers are "getting closer" on a deal that would send right-hander Matt Garza to Texas, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. A major league source confirms that the Rangers "have a pretty strong offer in", but that nothing is done yet.

Another source indicates that pitcher Luke Jackson may be among the prospects in play for the Cubs, who are known to be looking for two or three top prospects in any deal for Garza. Rosenthal noted that right-hander C.J. Edwards is being discussed between the two teams, and that third baseman Mike Olt is "possibly" involved. A deal involving Jackson, Edwards and Olt would align well with what the Cubs have been known to be looking for in talks. The involvement of top prospects Jurickson Profar and Martin Perez is considered unlikely at this point, and a source indicates that Neftali Feliz is probably not involved, either.

ESPN's Buster Olney reported earlier in the day that the Cubs are asking clubs to submit their "best and last offers" for Garza, signifying that they are looking to get a deal done soon. While the Rangers are the prominent team involved in talks, the Dodgers, Diamondbacks, Indians, Red Sox and Cardinals have also been reportedly involved. If the presumed deal with Texas falls apart, the Cubs will likely accept the next best offer and deal Garza before his next start.

As a source indicated earlier in the week, "you never know who might jump in late" and submit an offer that the Rangers cannot refuse. At this point, though, Texas is considered the likely destination for the 29-year old righty.
