FRIDAY: Free agent reliever Brian Wilson impressed scouts during an audition in Los Angeles on Thursday, according to a report from Danny Knobler of CBSSports.com. The ex-Giant consistently hit 90-93 mph with his fastball, and one scout who spoke to Knobler said that Wilson is "not far away" from being able to contribute to a major league team.
The Giants, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Athletics, Phillies, Rangers, Rockies and Cardinals were all in attendance for the session, according to Knobler. Pittsburgh is looking for late-inning relief due to closer Jason Grilli's recent injury, and the other teams who were in attendance have all been actively looking for relief help on the trade market. The Red Sox and Tigers, who are known to be aggressively searching for bullpen help, were not in attendance at the session. Boston has no current interest in the New Hampshire native, according to Scott Lauber of the Boston Herald.

Wilson, who was non-tendered by the Giants last winter, underwent his second Tommy John surgery last year and has not pitched since last April. San Francisco has not shut the door on the possible return of their former closer, and Andrew Baggarly of CSNBayArea.com reports that the team had Wilson throw a private session for pitching coach Dave Righetti and bullpen catcher Billy Hayes this week. While San Francisco is not considered the favorite to land Wilson, his familiarity with the organization may make the signing process easier for both sides.
Wilson, 32, is a two-time All-Star who has spent his entire major league career with the Giants. He helped lead the team to a World Series title in 2010, posting a 1.81 record and 48 saves while finishing seventh for the NL Cy Young award.
