Phillies interested in Joba Chamberlain

The Phillies and Yankees have interest in each other's players, which means that they could match up on a deal in the next three weeks.

The Philadelphia Phillies have expressed interest in New York Yankees reliever Joba Chamberlain, according to Mark Feinsand of the New York Daily News.

National League sources say the Phillies are amenable to dealing Michael Young and have expressed interest in Joba Chamberlain, a salary-dump swap that would save Philadelphia roughly $7 million. The sources also say Carlos Ruiz can be had before the deadline, too.

Chamberlain, 27, has been linked to trade rumors a couple of times over the last couple of weeks. The Braves, who are looking for bullpen help throughout the league, sent scouts to see him throw recently.

For the first time since 2010, Chamberlain has been relatively healthy. HIs performance this season has been less than stellar with a 5.75 ERA and a 2.20 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20.1 innings so far this year. Chamberlain is a free agent at the end of the season and will likely not require much in return unless a team is looking to dump salary, which the Phillies appear to want to do with Michael Young.

Young has been linked to trade rumors with the Boston Red Sox as well over the last couple of weeks, and is having a good year for a struggling Phillies team, hitting .288 with six home runs, 24 RBI and a .755 OPS. Young is making $6MM this year and will be a free agent after the season.

Carlos Ruiz missed the start of the 2013 season due to a 25-game suspension for amphetamines and has also spent time on the DL this year with a hamstring injury. The catcher is batting .267 in 32 games this season.

Both Young and Ruiz would fit needs for the Yankees. Young is a right-handed hitter who can play multiple positions including first and third base. Ruiz would be a upgrade over catcher Austin Romine, who is hitting .132 for the season.
